Can real strategy work on a touchscreen?
For years I assumed deep strategy games belonged on a mouse and keyboard. Then I spent a weekend with Tidebreaker Command and had to walk that back.
The trick is designing for the thumb, not shrinking a PC interface. Tidebreaker uses big tap targets, turn-based pacing and a save-anywhere system so you never feel rushed into a bad move on a bumpy bus ride.
What surprised me was how well the tension survived the format. Deciding whether to fortify a chokepoint or push for new territory feels just as weighty on a phone as it would on a monitor. The stakes are in the decision, not the input method.
If you've written off mobile strategy, give the genre another look. The good ones aren't watered down, they're rebuilt for how you actually play on the go.
